The right manufacturing process makes those decisions visible and manageable. It gives both the brand and the supplier a shared reference for what is being developed, what still needs approval, and what must be checked before shipment.

1. Define the Product Before Requesting a Quote

A productive supplier discussion starts with a clear product brief. At minimum, describe the product category, target age range, intended market, size range, season, expected fabric type, construction details, colorways, trims, labeling, packaging, and target positioning.

If some decisions are still open, identify them as open questions rather than leaving them ambiguous. For example, a brand may know that it wants a soft cotton-rich jersey but still need guidance on weight, stretch, recovery, or finishing. Common cost drivers include fabric composition and weight, custom dyeing or printing, embroidery, special washes, branded trims, complicated sewing operations, small cutting quantities, testing requirements, and packaging. Size range and color count can also affect how an order is planned.

MOQ should be discussed in relation to the actual product rather than treated as one universal number. The workable quantity may depend on fabric availability, color, print method, trim minimums, size breakdown, and production setup. 4. Select Fabric for the Product and Market

Fabric selection influences hand feel, fit, appearance, performance, care, and cost. Start from the garment’s intended use. A baby bodysuit, school sweatshirt, lightweight dress, and soft denim trouser each need different priorities.

Evaluate composition, weight, construction, stretch, recovery, shrinkage, colorfastness, pilling, surface finish, and care behavior as relevant to the style. Request physical swatches or sample yardage when possible, because color and texture can be misleading on screen.

Also distinguish between stock fabric, available mill qualities, and fully customized development. Each route has different implications for consistency, minimums, lead time, and color control. Do not approve a fabric only by name; confirm a reference swatch or other agreed standard that can be used during production.

5. Develop the First Sample

The first sample tests how the design, pattern, fabric, and construction work together. It is not simply a miniature version of bulk production. Its purpose is to reveal questions early, when changes are still manageable.

Review the sample against the current tech pack. Check overall proportion, measurements, ease, neckline and armhole shape, rise and seat, sleeve and leg length, seam placement, openings, closures, trim position, print or embroidery placement, and finishing.

Comments should be objective and traceable. Instead of saying that an area “looks wrong,” identify what needs to change and, when possible, provide the revised measurement or construction instruction. Use photographs and marked diagrams to clarify points, but keep the formal revision in the specification.

6. Manage Fit and Size Grading

Fit approval is a critical brand decision. The manufacturer can make patterns and samples, but the brand should define the intended fit and approve it on an appropriate form or fit model where possible.

After the base size is approved, review the grading rules across the full size range. Children’s body proportions do not change at the same rate in every area, so grading should not be treated as simple uniform enlargement. Safety and labeling obligations vary by product and destination. The brand should identify applicable legal and retailer requirements, while the manufacturer should produce to the confirmed specification and support agreed testing or documentation. Avoid assuming that a general factory statement replaces product-specific compliance review.

8. Approve a Pre-Production Standard

Before bulk production begins, all key details should be consolidated into an approved standard. Depending on the workflow, this may include an approved pre-production sample, sealed reference sample, approved fabric and color standards, trim cards, artwork approvals, measurement chart, construction details, packaging instructions, and test requirements.

This approval point reduces the chance that different teams work from different versions. The purchase order, bill of materials, tech pack, and sample comments should agree. Any accepted exception should be documented rather than left to memory.

The production schedule should be reviewed only after the major approvals and material status are clear. Lead time depends on the product, material sourcing, approvals, testing, production capacity, quantity, and shipment plan, so confirm a project-specific timeline rather than relying on a generic promise.

9. Prepare for Bulk Production

Bulk production usually begins with material purchasing or booking, incoming material checks, pattern and marker preparation, spreading and cutting, sewing, printing or embroidery where applicable, finishing, inspection, packing, and shipment coordination.

Before cutting, confirm that bulk fabric and trims match the approved references. Shade variation, shrinkage, width, defects, and performance should be reviewed according to the agreed control plan. Production teams should have the correct specification and sample available at the relevant operations.

Brands should also agree on communication checkpoints. Useful updates may cover material readiness, cutting, sewing progress, key approvals, identified issues, inspection timing, and shipment preparation. The goal is not constant messaging; it is timely visibility when a decision or corrective action is needed.

10. Control Quality During Production

Quality control should not be limited to a final inspection. Problems are easier to correct when they are identified near the operation that created them. In-line checks can review measurements, seam construction, stitch quality, attachments, artwork, appearance, and workmanship while production is still moving.

The control plan should reflect the product and its risks. A printed T-shirt, padded jacket, baby romper, and denim style do not need identical checkpoints. A passed inspection does not remove the need for accurate shipping documents and final commercial checks. Confirm the shipment method, carton information, packing list, invoice details, booking status, and any required documents with the responsible parties.

When comparing manufacturers, review the quality of their questions as well as their answers. Do they identify missing specifications? Do they explain the assumptions behind pricing? Do they separate confirmed facts from estimates? Do they keep revisions organized? Do they raise risks before they become urgent?

Relevant product experience matters, but it should be assessed against your actual styles, materials, market, quantities, and quality expectations. Ask for a development process that can be demonstrated through samples, documents, and agreed checkpoints rather than relying on broad capability claims.
